Fall SOCCER '19 for 3rd-6th Grades

3rd - 6th GRADE YOUTH SOCCER
SEASON: *August 29th - October 30th *except 9/4 start for 3/4 Boys LOCATION: Practices and Home games are at Huntley Meadow
Games vs. Upper Valley towns add to the fun!
FEE: $65 for the season. Norwich uniform required for games (navy with white - jersey & shorts). Order on-line, or buy at Rec. office. Stop by or call Brie @ 649-1419 x.5 to pick up these items at the Recreation Office upstairs in Tracy Hall. Please register early - After 9/4, a $10 late fee will also be charged. Non-Residents may join for an extra $10 fee if there is no soccer program in their town.

Our emphasis is on fun and developing skills, self-confidence & team spirit. The program includes drills stressing individual improvement, learning the mechanics and rules of the game, as well as games with neighboring Upper Valley towns ('7 vs. 7' for grades 3/4 and '9 vs. 9' for grades 5/6). Please bring a size 4 ball & water bottle to practice. Mouth protectors ($2 at Rec. office) & shin guards are strongly recommended. Cleats are helpful but not mandatory. For 3/4 games, each team will be split in half and will play half the opposing team in 2 mini games. We therefore need many parent volunteer assistants & officials. Please register on-line to volunteer to help with a team, &/or contact your child's coach. Home games will often be during the scheduled practice times or Saturdays, but away games may be anytime. Please try not to over-schedule, resulting in missed practices and games. If one has to miss, please let coaches know as far in advance as possible. Every child consistently attending practice should play equitably in games.

Aging Actively Fall 2019

Title: Aging Actively

Dates: Sept. 10 - Nov. 14, 2019
Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays 7:30-8:30 am

Finding balance and pain-free movement in an ever changing body can be hard and frustrating! We’ve endured a lot of stress on our bodies in our lifetimes and you may be feeling warning signs in the form of pain and inflammation that limit your fun and vitality. This 10 week exercise class will address how we currently move and walk and will give options on how to retrain our bodies so we don’t wear out so quickly. You will gain mobility, stability and strength in all areas, plus improved reaction time so balance will be a breeze. All levels of fitness are welcome. Exercises will include both standing and laying on the floor work. Please bring your own yoga mat, tennis ball, and smile!


GENTLE FLOW YOGA - FALL 19

Follow up your Aging Actively class with some gentle yoga, designed for adults of any age, including seniors and those with minor physical ailments who prefer a slower paced, or more relaxed practice, and is open to all levels. Students will practice the integration of breath with movement and proper alignment. Classes may include gentle stretching, sun salutations, restorative postures, and pranayama (breath work).
Daphne has been practicing yoga for fourteen years and decided to become a yoga teacher to share the benefits that she gained from yoga with others. Daphne completed a 200-hour teacher-training program at Sharing Yoga in Concord, NH in 2011, and is currently enrolled in Brett Larkin’s online yoga teaching program. Daphne is looking forward to sharing her practice and helping to contribute to the creation of community through yoga. Daphne also has a doctoral degree in Counseling Psychology, and integrates mindfulness with her work. Daphne likes to create a safe, gentle, and supportive environment in which each yoga student can further their own practice.

Yoga Fundamentals 8:45 to 10, Thursdays
This class will offer a vigorous, but deliberately-paced vinyasa practice. We will build both strength and flexibility as we work through fundamental asana (poses) and sequences, focusing on breath and alignment. The Upper Valley Fencing Club (www.UpperValleyFencingClub.com) provides ability-appropriate challenges for fencers with a broad range of experience. Communal improvement of form, technique and skills is the primary focus during the initial formal foil program of each session, followed by advanced practice, as well as “open fencing” in all 3 weapons in the latter part. Accommodation for several younger students may be possible - contact Paul or Ralph. PROGRAM: Ever-changing program with a seasonal focus on the arts, science and our community. We will have entire weeks of Lego and cardboard construction, community projects, art and craft. Throughout the year, we will be participating in a community billboard art project, taking part in a cider pressing with our library, crafting our own Halloween costumes, exploring local architecture before building our own gingerbread houses, creating holiday and Valentine cards for our families! Every week brings something new and engaging.
If your child is also in another Norwich Recreation program taking place before or after Wind Downs, please make the Recreation Director aware, and we can arrange a Counselor escort them to/from their practice. Families with more than two children are also eligible for a discount.

PROGRAM:  Introductory basketball-handling skills will be taught through lead-up games and activities. Lots of individual skills practice will happen amidst the fun. The number one goal is for all participants to be introduced to the sport in a friendly atmosphere. Our 8 foot hoops welcome success. Mouth protectors are recommended but not mandatory. Uniforms are not required for this age group, however our royal blue Norwich T-shirts tend to make players feel like part of the team. These are an optional ($13) purchase from the Recreation Department. If you have your own (labeled) Junior sized basketball, bring it along. This fun class will expand your knowledge of how to be a safe and responsible mountain bike rider. Learn basic skills, minor bike maintenance, and enjoy playing a variety of games. Safety rules for biking on trails as well as dirt & paved roads, will be covered. Learn how to balance better and perform basic maneuvers, like wheel lifts and cornering. Riders will learn what to wear/what tools to carry/how to ride safely in town as a pack. Riders must be confident riding in town and on easy trailsOur Adventurers group will be challenged with more difficult technical skills and terrain with longer rides.  Equipment needed: TUNED mtn. bike, properly fitted helmet, water bottle & snack (carried by rider); gloves & eye protection recommended

Wonder of Animals - Wednesdays: 6, 7, 8, 9 year olds • 2:15-5:15 p.m.  FEE: $35 per class  - From Mount Denali in Alaska to the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific – we shall paint the resilient animals, their habitats and capture their “ROARS” for our help to protect the abundance of all animal species all over the world.

 

Picassomania... and More!  - Thursdays: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 year olds • 3:00-5:15 p.m.  FEE: $35 per class - The Grand Palais in Paris recently showcased Picasso’s paintings on a grand scale! The exhibit reminded me of his PASSION for art making, and furthermore, of the artists he influenced.

 

Exploring Watercolor Painting    Friday Mornings: 3, 4, 5 year olds • 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.  FEE: $35 per class.  Watercolor painting is fun and fast, offering saturated colors and a variety of expressive gestures to painters of all levels. We will learn a variety of “next octave” techniques as returning young artists make their own original paintings using this exciting medium. We say – “All aboard!"

Aging Actively

Finding balance and pain-free movement in an ever changing body can be hard and frustrating! We’ve endured a lot of stress on our bodies in our lifetimes and you may be feeling warning signs in the form of pain and inflammation that limit your fun and vitality. This 10 week exercise class will address how we currently move and walk and will give options on how to retrain our bodies so we don’t wear out so quickly.  You will gain mobility, stability and strength in all areas, plus improved reaction time so balance will be a breeze.  All levels of fitness are welcome.  Exercises will include both standing and laying on the floor work.  Please bring your own yoga mat, tennis ball, and smile!

Vinyasa Flow          Tuesdays & Thursdays 5:30pm - 6:45pm - *Sept. 4 - Dec. 20 *NO class on 11/22 (9/4, 10/18 & 11/6 in Multi) Vinyasa Flow/Levels 1 & 2 Come experience a strong and fun 75-minute moving meditation! You will lengthen, strengthen, and energize your entire body through creative sequencing and awareness of your breath. This class will leave you feeling both invigorated and relaxed. Gentle Flow Yoga     Tuesdays 9:30am
Gentle yoga is designed for adults of any age, including seniors and those with minor physical ailments who prefer a slower paced, or more relaxed practice, and is open to all levels. Students will practice the integration of breath with movement and proper alignment. Classes may include gentle stretching, sun salutations, restorative postures, and pranayama (breath work). Yoga Fundamentals  Thursdays  8:45 to 10
This class will offer a vigorous, but deliberately-paced vinyasa practice. We will build both strength and flexibility as we work through fundamental asana (poses) and sequences, focusing on breath and alignment. We will also incorporate major teachings of yogic philosophy into our practice. As a mixed- level class, there will be options for all levels of practice! Instructor: Chrissy Morley

DAYS/TIMES:  Mondays & Wednesdays; group aerobic warm-up/game from 5:30pm - 6pm for all Fencers

Basic drills 6 - 7pm for all Fencers; Drills & bouts 7 - 8:30pm for Intermediate/Advanced Fencers

The Upper Valley Fencing Club (www.UpperValleyFencingClub.com) provides ability-appropriate challenges for fencers with a broad range of experience. Communal improvement of form, technique and skills is the primary focus during the initial formal foil program of each session, followed by advanced practice, as well as “open fencing” in all 3 weapons in the latter part. Accommodation for several younger students possible-contact Paul or Ralph. All members, except for beginner/trial fencers, must provide their own equipment.
